Moving in the right Direction
Posted at 3:40 PM on Monday, February 22, 2010
When women win awards at film ceremonies, it’s usually the glitz and glam of the Hollywood A-list actresses we’re looking at, but last night’s Orange BAFTA awards was all about female talent behind the camera, when Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to walk off with the best director prize! Bigelow, ex wife of blockbuster movie director James Cameron who was also up for the same award, with his $2bn box office hit Avatar, lost to Bigelow’s film drama, The Hurt Locker, which took only a fraction of that amount. Ouch, but no hard feelings we hope.

The story of US army bomb disposal men serving in post-war Iraq went on to take five other BAFTA awards, and it’s hoped that next month she’ll be the first lady to win best director at the Oscar’s. Congrats to Bigelow and here’s hoping it paves the way for many more talented female directors!
