New "virtual vibrator" technology being developed by bonking boffins across the pond could make cyber-sex more stimulating for lovers in long-distance relationships.

The Edmonton Journal reports that 'teledildonics' - also known as 'cyberdildonics' - centres on sex toys which can be controlled via the internet.

Amir Vatan, co-creator of the concept, told the paper that it has proven particularly popular with military personnel keen to transmit "the physical sensation of touch" to their partners.

"It can also alleviate problems in long-distance relationships if you have a spouse who travels regularly," he noted.

Columnist Regina Lynn chipped in: "It not only bridges the gap between mental and physical, but now you can be stimulated without typing one-handed."

There has been speculation that cyberdildonics will eventually reach the world of social networking sites, with browsers able to post a "widget" on their page which can be activated by partners for a fondle from afar.
