Prince of Wales reduces annual carbon footprint

Prince of Wales reduces annual carbon footprint

Annual accounts published by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall show the household reduced its carbon emissions by nine per cent last year.

The household's carbon footprint was published for the first time in this year's annual review and a target to reduce emissions by at least a further 12.5 per cent by 2012 was also set.

Clarence House said the reduction in carbon emissions was due to the prince taking fewer journeys by plane and helicopter and more by car and train.

Highgrove, one of the prince's properties, was also kitted out with 'green' electricity from sustainable sources and the prince's official cars became reliant on 100 per cent bio-diesel.

The prince's income from the Duchy or Cornwall estate rose by eight per cent to just over £15 million, which according to Clarence House was principally due to increased income from commercial property and from financial investments.

Duchy Originals, Prince Charles' organic and natural foods company, made a profit of £1 million for the fourth consecutive year and the firm's retail sales increased to £53 million.

All of the profits from Duchy Originals go to the prince's Charities Foundations while over half of the total Duchy of Cornwall profits are used for the prince's official work.

Other information from the review reveals that the Prince of Wales took 632 official engagements last year, of which 86 were overseas.
