Poll shows benefit of 'Brown bounce'

Poll shows benefit of

A Sky News poll will be good reading for the soon-to-be prime minister Gordon Brown as it shows Labour is now neck and neck with the Conservatives in terms of voting intention.

Labour is currently on 36 points, trailing the Conservatives by one and ahead of the Liberal Democrats on 12 points.

Furthermore, the YouGov survey shows that out of three leadership criteria - trust, leadership and charisma - Mr Brown is more favoured than Conservative leader David Cameron in two out of the three.

Perhaps unsurprisingly Mr Brown is behind Mr Cameron in terms of charisma, but is way ahead in trust and leadership.

When answering readers' questions in the Independent, Mr Brown responded to a query about his opinions on Mr Cameron by saying: "We've had a couple of conversations but I don't really know him."

When asked who people think will be prime minister after the next general election, Mr Brown again led Mr Cameron by more than ten points.

Mr Brown will visit Buckingham Palace today and will be asked by the Queen to form a new government after Mr Blair has formally tendered his resignation.

The outgoing prime minister did not fare well in the poll as more people think Britain is a worse place to live than ten years ago.

However, Mr Blair must still retain some of his communication skills because when the survey asked which leader people would most like to have a cup of tea with, the outgoing prime minister came out on top by a landslide.
