It took them seven years and a lot of research, but two ladies have finally made, a quite literally, groundshaking documentary - on the history of the vibrator and its relationship with the female orgasm.

This largely under studied area was chanced upon by historian Rachel Maines who stumbled across adverts for the electrical sex toy while researching needlework patterns in early 20th century women's magazines.

The film makers, Wendy Slick and Emiko Omori, will reveal what was found in Passion and Power: The Technology of Orgasm at the Lincoln Center in New York this Saturday (July 28th).

"Wendy and I both came out of the sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll generation," said Omori speaking to San Francisco Chronicle.

"We thought we knew it all. We hardly knew anything."

In the documentary, the sex toys' radical political and social influence are revealed and iconic orgasmic crusader Betty Dobson is featured with her infamous message: "Independent orgasm, I guarantee, will lead to independent thoughts."
