Pete Doherty has avoided jail after a judge at west London magistrates court ordered him to go into rehab.

The singer pleaded guilty to possessing crack cocaine and heroin as well as quantities of cannabis and ketamine. He also admitted guilt over two driving offences.

Judge Davinder Lachhar said she was considering all options, but decided to defer sentencing on the condition that he takes a place on a rehab programme.

The Babyshambles frontman turned up late for his court hearing resulting in the judge issuing a warrant for his arrest.

But the singer arrived shortly afterwards and had his hearing postponed until the afternoon.

The judge told him: "If you go to this place to have detox and take advantage of it then we will see what sentence is appropriate when you next come, but if you do not I can tell you now that you will go into custody."

The former Libertines frontman is currently under a court-imposed review of his well-publicised addiction problems and was praised earlier this year by Judge Jane McIvor at Thames magistrates court for "more than cooperating" with the order. Doherty has had numerous attempts at rehab in the past.

Doherty, 28, is currently in a relationship with the model Kate Moss.
