The Labour party is anticipating confirmation from Tony Blair that he will resign as both an MP and prime minister tomorrow.

According to reports Mr Blair will travel to his Sedgefield constituency after officially tendering his resignation as premier to the Queen at Buckingham Palace tomorrow.

He is then expected to confirm he will step down as an MP in the northern England constituency he has served since 1983 and trigger a by-election for the seat.

Downing Street was not available for comment on the claims, provided by Labour insiders to media outlets.

When Mr Blair confirmed he would step down as prime minister to party activists on May 10th, he distanced himself from claims he would also quit as an MP.

Tomorrow's anticipated announcement raises the chances of Mr Blair being named as Middle East envoy by the quartet of the US, Russia, the UN and the EU as has been rumoured during the last week.

Because MPs cannot legally resign, Mr Blair will instead apply to the Office of the Chiltern Hundreds to leave the House of Commons; just as former Labour leader Neil Kinnock did in 1995.
